It takes the assistance of many fine individuals to make our Historical Society a success for our community.
The following people give selflessly of their time to make sure everything runs smoothly,
the museums stay in top condition, displays are arranged properly, artifacts and
materials are preserved and tours and events are held throughout the year to showcase
the entire collection and our rich heritage.
Our hats are off to these wonderful folks!

The historical society was formed on May 11, 1967 for Monroe’s Sesquicentennial celebration. A group of volunteers desired to put on a 4 day event to honor the (then) village’s 150th birthday, including the printing of a history book and making a commemorative coin. They also wanted to complete a project to restore a log cabin gifted to Monroe on land donated by the Lions Club (now our community park on South Main St). Future plans included the collecting, cataloging and presentation of historic items of Monroe interest.
The initial trustees of the nonprofit society were G.W. McGohan, John R. Musgrove
& William R. Hendrickson.
Ruth Johnson Cast was Statutory Agent.
The new board officers were: Mrs. G.W. McGohan, president; Paul Ramseyer, vice president; Mrs. Gordon Doty, recording secretary; Mrs. Mark A. Neu, corresponding secretary; Dale Forman, treasurer; Mrs. Kirtley W. Ervin, historian; Mrs. James L. Cast, curator; Mrs. Charles F. Gorman, Dale Ridenour, Mrs. E. Eugene Switzer & Dr. James M. Anderson, directors.
